Uttar Pradesh is set to boost heritage tourism by repurposing historical sites into vibrant, sustainable destinations, drawing inspiration from Rajasthan’s successful model.

Uttar Pradesh is embarking on an ambitious journey to revitalize its heritage tourism, drawing inspiration from Rajasthan’s successful approach. The state’s historical sites, ranging from ancient forts to ornate palaces, are seen as potential hubs for experiential tourism. This vision was highlighted during the recent ‘Heritage Conclave,’ where key industry figures and stakeholders gathered to discuss ways to leverage the rich cultural legacy of Uttar Pradesh.

At the event, Prateek Hira, Chairman of FICCI UP, emphasized the economic impact of Rajasthan’s model, where heritage buildings have been repurposed into thriving tourism assets. He pointed out that Rajasthan’s ability to turn its historical properties into profitable and sustainable tourism destinations could serve as a blueprint for Uttar Pradesh. By tapping into the state’s unique heritage, there is a promising opportunity to both boost the local economy and preserve its cultural identity.

A major development during the conclave was the unveiling of Uttar Pradesh’s Heritage Policy 2024. The policy, presented by Eesha Priya, Special Secretary of U.P. Tourism, encourages the adaptive reuse of heritage properties. It introduces various incentives, including subsidies for property owners, to make the process more accessible. Under this policy, buildings that are over a century old can be transformed into heritage hotels, wellness retreats, convention centers, or boutique accommodations, further enhancing the state’s tourism offering.

This initiative will operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, fostering collaboration between the government and private investors. The aim is to ensure that heritage sites are not only preserved but also developed in a way that supports sustainable tourism growth. By blending tradition with modern hospitality services, Uttar Pradesh hopes to create a new class of tourist experiences, drawing visitors from both India and abroad.

Experts at the conclave shared insights on successful case studies of repurposed heritage buildings, demonstrating how these sites can maintain their historical essence while offering modern amenities. The integration of features such as gardens, pools, and luxury services in restored heritage properties has proven to attract high-end travelers, providing both cultural enrichment and comfort.

As Uttar Pradesh moves forward with its heritage tourism plans, the state is poised to transform its historic sites into immersive experiences that celebrate its rich cultural past while contributing to its economic growth. With the right blend of preservation, innovation, and investment, the state’s heritage tourism sector has the potential to flourish in the years to come.
