UN Deputy Secretary-General Brussels visit, 10-11 April

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, is in Brussels this week. On Wednesday, 10 April, she chaired the Governing Body meeting of the Spotlight Initiative, the United Nations high-impact initiative to end violence against women and girls.

She was joined by Jutta Urpilainen, European Union Commissioner for International Partnerships, Sima Bahous, UN Women Executive Director (virtually), and civil society activist Shamah Bulangis to review the transformative impact of the Initiativeâs first phase and discuss how to sustain the progress made in preventing and responding to the increasing global tide of violence against women and girls. The discussion also identified partnership priorities and reaffirmed the European Unionâs commitment to supporting the Spotlight Initiative.

Ms. Mohammed and Ms. Urpilainen later took part in the 4th Annual EU-UN Strategic Dialogue on Sustainable Development where they discussed preparations for Summit of the Future, including the Global Digital Compact and reforming development finance architecture.

Ms. Mohammed also met with Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner for Climate Action.

And later, with Caroline Gennez, Minister of Development Cooperation and Major Cities.

On Thursday, 11 April, Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, spoke at todayâs opening of the #GlobalGateway High-Level Education Event. The event aims to highlight the EUâs role in transforming global education and bridging skills gaps.
