‘Who’s shopping there?’ River Island’s latest collection divides fashion fans as ‘2010 vibes’ spotted
FROM leather jackets to glitzy party outfits, River Island was once the place to go to for all of your fashion needs.
But some fashion fans have been left wondering who the customer is after spotting several items that were fashionable back in 2010.
It comes after one woman took to TikTok (@coffeehater7) and showed her social media followers around her local high-street branch after being left shocked by some of the items currently on sale.
In the clip, she showed a pair of gold studded ballet pumps, metallic purses, espadrille-style wedges, and a pair of open toe sling-back tan boots.
The camera then zoomed in on an unusual pair of shoes which have a brown pattern and zip front finish, before moving onto the bag section.
Amongst those on sale include cross-body bags which have the store’s logo clearly emblazoned across the front and strap.
“River Island is giving 2012 vibes,” she suggested.
And it seems the fashion fan wasn’t the only one to think so – with the post quickly garnering thousands views and several comments from social media users.
“It’s giving 2011 Keeping Up with the Kardashians or something,” wrote one.
A second noted: “Which is why I do not invest in fast fashion. Keep to your classic staple pieces.”
Meanwhile, a third wrote: “I will never understand how they still are in business? I mean their bags are mediocre at best lol.”
A further chimed in: “Who actually shops there?”
River Island recently launched it’s new spring collection on social media, much to the delight of shoppers.
The brand posted on Instagram “New Collection, Spring ’24. Ready to defrost? So is your wardrobe.
“The big switchover starts here: pack away the big coats and chunky knits (in hope), and discover our new season pieces now.”
One fan was quick to comment: “These shorts & dresses” with three heart-eyed emojis.
Another said: “River Island is my go to shop,” while a third said: “Obsessed!”
The high-street brand was showcasing new shorts, strappy dresses perfect for throwing on over a bikini and some festival-wear.
And River Island is loved by many celebs too – including Rochelle Humes who was spotted presenting This Morning earlier this month wearing a gorgeous pale yellow slip dress and crossover jumper.
River Island is not the only high street shop to have been criticised for some of it’s clothing designs recently.
Fabulous previously told how shoppers claimed New Look is “like a jumble sale” and “absolutely tragic” with some of the clothes described as “cheap looking but [with] expensive [price tags]”.
And the fashion brand also made headlines recently for introducing a charge for online orders to be returned.
The Sun reported how River Island with be charging customers £2 for a return to be processed.
Other big retailers including Debenhams, Zara, H&M and New Look have introduced similar changes over the past few years as online shopping has become more popular.
River Island says items must be returned within 28 days of delivery and should be clean, unworn and with tags still attached.
An update posted on its website last month said: “For UK orders placed on or after 17th January 2024, returns processed through our return portal back to the warehouse will be charged £2 per return.
” This charge will be automatically deducted from your refunded amount.”
“Returns to our stores will continue to be free of charge.
“International returns are charged for through the return portal.”
The Sun approached River Island for a comment.
