BRUSSELS TRIP

A group of Sixth Class students from St. Paul’s NS, Castlerea had the privilege of travelling to Brussels by invitation of local MEP, Luke “Ming” Flanagan recently. The students were accompanied by school staff and representatives of the school Board of Management with everyone receiving a very warm welcome from Luke and his team in Brussels. They were given the opportunity to visit the Parliament buildings and to learn more about the workings of the EU. The exciting trip also included a guided tour of the beautiful, historic city of Brussels and an interesting visit to a Natural History Museum. The trip was of enormous educational benefit opening the children’s minds to travel, European languages and new cultures while also giving an insight to the organisation of European politics and the upcoming elections. St. Paul’s NS is taking part in the “Say Yes to Languages” project funded by the Department of Education with this year’s chosen language being French. Navigating the city’s tourist sites and meeting French speakers inspired the children to use their knowledge of French phrases while in Brussels. Thanks to Luke and all his team in Castlerea and Brussels for the wonderful opportunity for young people in Castlerea.

Dr. Alan was a wonderful doctor and always carried out his duties in a professional and caring manner. He was very kind to the many patients he attended to over the years and no matter what time they called on him, let it be day or night, he always looked after their needs. He was so approachable. His late father Dr. Michael Delaney did the same for the many people of Castlerea for over 40 years. Alan was a very popular person. He had a great interest in sport and played Gaelic football, rugby and golf. He was also a very good swimmer. He played intercounty football with Roscommon at minor and junior level. The trainer of that team was the present Connacht Council CEO, John Prenty,. He also played rugby and golf with Ballyhaunis. He will be sadly missed by his children, Donal, Laura, Keith, Ursula, Aine and Alan; daughters-in-law, Inese, Mary and Eimear; grandchildren, Harry, Adam, Jane, Sophie, Anna, Lukass, Nancy, Maggie, Ailbe and Avery; sisters Pauline Jones (Tulsk) and Joan Walsh (Sligo); cousins, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and a large circle of friends. He loved when people both young and old would come to visit him and would always make them welcome and have a conversation with them. He had great time for his postman John Sharkey who was very kind to him. He was a farmer and he had a great love for the land. He took great pride in his little tractor and transport box, which he used to do a lot of chores with including his shopping in Castlerea, his Sunday Mass in Trien.
